Nitzia Logothetis Receives Honorary Doctorate for Advancing Women’s Mental Health

In recognition of her groundbreaking work in women’s mental health and global philanthropy, Seleni Institute co-founder Nitzia Logothetis was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University of West Attica. Her powerful remarks highlighted the universal need for emotional support during the childbearing years and the far-reaching impact of Seleni’s mission.

On May 28, 2025, Nitzia Logothetis, psychotherapist and co-founder of the Seleni Institute, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the Department of Early Childhood Education and Care at the University of West Attica (UWA). This prestigious honor recognizes Nitzia’s pioneering contributions to women’s and family mental health, as well as her extensive philanthropic impact around the world.

The conferment ceremony took place at the historic Society of the Athenians and was hosted by UWA Honorary Doctor Eleftherios G. Skiadas. Distinguished attendees included the President of the Hellenic Parliament, Nikitas Kaklamanis; UWA Rector Professor Panagiotis Kaldis; Department Chair Professor Konstantinos Petrogiannis; MP and public health expert Dr. Athina Linou; and other esteemed leaders in education and public service.

In her moving acceptance speech, Nitzia reflected on the founding of the Seleni Institute in 2011 to address a critical and unmet need: comprehensive emotional support during the childbearing years. She emphasized that a child’s mental health is inextricably linked to the mental health of their parent and reminded the audience that perinatal mental health struggles do not discriminate; they are global, universal issues.

Sharing the powerful story of an oncologist in New York who battled postpartum anxiety, Nitzia underscored the importance of purpose, quoting Viktor Frankl: “He who knows the why can deal with any how.” She closed her remarks with a call to hold on to hope and faith amidst adversity: “Life is not supposed to be easy, and faith can make the difference between giving up and moving forward.”

Today, the Seleni Institute has directly supported the mental health of more than 2.3 million individuals and has touched the lives of over 10 million people worldwide. Its New York City therapy center has treated more than 4,100 patients, benefiting over 21,000 families, and its global training programs have equipped over 6,200 mental health professionals with the tools to better support individuals through all stages of reproductive life.

We are immensely proud of Nitzia’s leadership and this well-deserved recognition. Her unwavering commitment to destigmatizing and strengthening mental health care continues to inspire progress and foster healing for women and families across the globe.
