Seleni Spotlight: Elena Leka

March 2022 - Seleni welcomed Elena Leka to the team this semester. We are thrilled to have her as part of our Seleni family these next few months!

Tell us about yourself.

My name is Elena and I am from Greece. I’m 22 years old and recently graduated from The American College of Greece-Deree with a B.Sc. in International Business. Currently I’m completing a minor in Graphic Design. I have worked very hard in my education and am ready to apply my knowledge into practice. I’m broadening my skills through internships, and at some point in the near future, I plan to pursue a Master’s degree in Business Strategy. My dream is to travel the world, gain experience, and hopefully start up a business of my own.

What excites you most about being part of the Seleni family?

Becoming a part of the Seleni family made me really happy. What excites me the most is their purpose to help people with mental health, mostly women. I’m someone who loves helping, listening, and being there for people, and that’s how I know it will be a wonderful experience. Therefore, being a part of this incredible family who passionately supports the people who need their help is fulfilling.

How do you practice self-care?

An effective self-care plan should be tailored to your life and your needs. It needs to be something created by you, for you. It’s very important to make time for ourselves because if we feel good, positive, and motivated we transfer this energy to those around us. To practice self-care I create a weekly to-do-list, which includes cooking, reading, exercising, eating healthy food, getting enough sleep, painting, and listening to music.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?

The best piece of advice I have ever received is “to work hard, stay humble, and always be kind.” We can all agree that success is beautiful, but it can also turn into pride. We should always remember our roots, appreciate how far we’ve come, and never forget that who we are is so much greater than what we do.

What’s a quote that you carry with you to uplift yourself?

Winston Churchill said “Never give up on something you can’t go a day without thinking about”. When life is tough, giving up always seems like the easiest option. However, regret is the worst feeling a person can feel and that’s why I strongly believe that it’s important to take risks in life rather than regretting later on. After all we will always encounter challenges, so why not while we do what we truly want?!
